The Angel Wore Pink Jeans - Every family has stories that are told over and over again. This is one of our family’s favorites: In the late 1970s, my father was a student preacher at the Methodist Church in Palmer while he took classes at SMU.
It was decided that the church would put on a Live Nativity on the huge front lawn of the church. My mother helped plan the big event, and she also planned to be the head angel that appears to the shepherds in the field. There was a little hill off to one side that was perfect for the angels, and a spotlight was positioned in front of it.
The night of the big performance, the angels made their appearance. Mother was surrounded by several smaller angels, their silver halos and wings shining in the spotlight and their arms spread wide. After delivering their “tidings of great joy”, they slowly backed away. Everything was going just fine, until one blond-headed angel tripped. She landed on her back, her white robe flew up and the only thing you could see were her legs, covered in light pink jeans. She quickly got up and ran off.
I’m sure at the time she did not think it was funny, even though many of us thought so. Our family certainly thought it was hilarious, and still do. The angel in pink jeans was my younger sister!
This year, as your family gathers for Christmas, why don’t you tell some of your favorite family stories? I hope you all have a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and a wonderful time with family and friends.
