We love going to farmers markets all over North Central Texas, We had heard that the Ennis Farmers Market was a great little market so decided to check it out. We arrived around 10:30 and, sure enough, it was in full swing and had quite a crowd. The market is situated on N. Dallas Street between West Ennis Avenue and West Knox, in the middle of downtown. The street is blocked off and the market area swings around the corner onto West Knox. There is plenty of parking within easy walking distance. The booths were set up in the middle of the street and allowed for easy strolling and shopping.
There were at least 40 to 50 stalls, with a nice variety of home-grown produce, homemade ice cream, fresh eggs, great BBQ, pies, cakes, honey and more. You name it and it was probably here!
One of the things we don't like to see in a farmers market is what we call the “Fake Farmers”. These are folks who grow nothing themselves, but buy the produce from another farmers market, mark it up and then resell it at some other farmers market. Most of the produce we saw was actually grown or raised by the sellers in and around Ennis and Corsicana. The fresh vegetables, eggs and baked goods looked so good and fresh. We even found fresh duck eggs.
Our hats are off to the City of Ennis, and in particular to Becky McCarty, the Farmers Market Coordinator. We were excited when we found out how active the City of Ennis is in supporting and promoting this event. One amazing thing we learned is the city does not charge sellers for their spaces, which probably accounts for the vibrant atmosphere and electricity in the air at this little market! Everyone we came in contact with was so excited.
This is a great venue for a city to get behind as it gets people back downtown and helps revitalize once diminishing downtown areas! With the growth of this little market, we can see new business starting up in the downtown area in the near future.
David Vineyard was set up selling Gluten-Free baked goods. Ronnie Davis, of Big & Rich Custom BBQ Cooking, was there with some of the best BBQ I have tasted in a good while. Mary Fort, of Mary's Sweets, was selling her pies. I purchased a Fried Peach pie, was going to share it my companion, but before I realized it I had eaten the whole thing!
You can even get a massage at this farmers market! Kristi Prince-Wolf with StressLess Massage Therapy offered massages for $1 per minute. I'm gonna' come back for this!
Tammy Coston was there with all her gourmet jellies. I purchased the Blackberry-Jalapeño jelly and my companion bought the Basil Jelly. You have never tasted anything like these in your life. Tammy is on the short list for recognition from Martha Stewart's American-Made program with some her homemade jams and jellies.
Tommy and Kristi Copeland, with Oak Grove Organic Farm, have a nice booth with great looking Home-Grown organic vegetables, jellies, and other items. My companion almost bought them out! There were so many vendors we have not mentioned but who have wonderful items. Visit the Ennis Farmers Market on Saturdays through October 25th. They are open from 8:00am until 1:00pm. We hope to have more reports from this lively market to share over the season.
