“Nim’s Island” is a Rolicking Adventure
By Kathryn E. Eriksen

The new Walden Media’s production of “Nim’s Island” is a great adventure story of love, loyalty and fighting for what you believe in. A fictional character whose heroism inspires uncommon feats of bravery ties the juxtaposition of two stories together.

Alex Rover (Gerard Butler) is a famous, swash-buckling type hero – think Indiana Jones meets Captain Jack from “Pirates of the Caribbean.” He resides in the imagination of his creator, Alexandria Rover (Jodie Foster). His prowess at getting into and out of adventures is legendary in literary circles. Alex Rover is known all over the world, even in its most remote corner – Nim’s Island.

Nim (Abigail Breslin) and her father live on an uninhabited island in the Fiji Islands to perform scientific studies about volcanic activity. An unexpected storm separates them and Nim reaches out to the only hero she knows – Alex Rover. Through a series of e-mails, Nim convinces Alex Rover to come to her island to help her save it from pirates.

Jodie Foster gives an arresting performance as Alexandra Rover, a woman scared of her own shadow. Watch for a scene in which she is standing before her front door, about to open it on an adventure she did not want. The play of emotions across her face as she contemplates various possible scenarios could only have been carried off by an actress of Ms. Foster’s abilities.

Abigail Breslin shines as Nim, a girl who dares to dream big and who never gives up, even in the face of overpowering odds. Ms. Breslin captures the innocence of childhood and deftly portrays the growth that is forced upon her character by external circumstances.

Gerard Butler adds a sparkle to Alex Rover that makes you want to sit at his feet and listen to stories about his adventures. His heroic voice can be heard underling the story’s conflicts, and it calls us to be heroes in our own lives.

“Nim’s Island” is rated PG, for some violence and storm scenes. It would best be seen by children 8 years old and up. Go to www.nimsisland.com to watch the trailer.
