Galaxy Drive-In Theatre is
Great Family Fun

Did you know that Ellis County boasts one of the only remaining
 drive-in
movie theatres in the entire Metroplex? Did you know that it only
costs $6.00 per adult and $4.00 per child to watch two first run
movies under the stars?
Where is this magical place? In Garrett, Texas, right off IH-45.
The Galaxy Drive-In is a throw back to the 1950’s – a place where
families pile into vehicles to camp out under the stars, waiting for
the movie to begin. The “Wolf Man Jack Show” plays from the renovated
car speakers, adding to the nostalgic flavor. Kids and their dads toss
the football or Frisbee while moms sit on picnic blankets or in chairs
visiting. What could be better than this?
The Snack Bar and other refreshment stands are staffed with local
teens who are friendly and polite. The prices of the food is more than
reasonable - $2.00 for a cheeseburger and $3.00 for a large bucket of
popcorn! But do not wait until movie time to buy your food – the line
for the Snack Bar starts to get long about 7:30 p.m.
The Galaxy is open seven nights a week. If you decide to go on the
weekend, be sure you arrive by 6:30 p.m. to get a good spot. The back
two rows of each theatre are reserved for large pick-up trucks and
SUVs. If you find a space that does not have the pole with speakers,
do not despair. You can hear all the great music and the movie when
you tune your FM stereo into 88.3!
After you eat dinner and while you still have time, be sure to meander
over to the 18 hole miniature golf course. Well-designed and fun to
play, it helps keeps the kids entertained. And again the cost is more
than reasonable - $2.00 for 9 holes! Look for the neon palm trees that
add a festive 1950’s atmosphere to the golf course.
We recently visited the Galaxy to see “Nim’s Island” (see attached
movie review) and had a great time. The temperature was perfect – 75
degrees, until sunset. Then coats and blankets were pulled out to
chase off the evening chill. Our vantage point in the back of the
pick-up truck gave us a panoramic view of the movie screen. The
blanket of stars that covered the night sky was the crowning touch on
watching a great movie outside!
