“Little
Shop of Horrors”
By Kathryn E. Eriksen
Just in time for Halloween, Ennis Public Theatre’s production of the
musical, “Little Shop of Horrors” is presented for one final show on
October 26-28, 2007. If you want to see live theater, in a small,
intimate setting, with talented actors and a lively musical score,
this play is a must see.
“Little Shop of Horrors” is about a flower shop on Skid Row in New
York City. Neither customers or hope are abundant, and the store is
about to close. Seymour, the meek, passive clerk who constantly wants
to please, grows an exotic plant he named the “Audrey 2,” after his
love interest, Audrey, the other employee of the store. The foibles of
human nature and the choices made for love are portrayed against a
backdrop of the plant’s appetite. The Do Wap girls provide comedic
musical relief to the events that take place. The acting is superb and
the singing well done. It is definitely a play worth seeing.
Ennis Public Theatre opened on July 12, 2002 and has produced more
than 30 shows. There are approximately 80 seats, with the front row
set about 5 feet from the edge of the stage. They bill themselves as
the “finest live intimate theatre in the Southwest.” Not having
experienced other small theatres, I have no basis for comparison. But
I felt almost part of the play when we saw “Little Shop of
|
Horrors”
and I enjoyed the feeling of connection with the actors. After the
show, the actors wait in the lobby and the audience has an opportunity
to speak to each one. The sense of connection with the actors was
solidified by this personal contact.
The curtain rises for the Friday, October 26th and Saturday, October
27 shows at 8:00 p.m. Because seating is limited, it is highly
recommended that you arrive at 7:30 p.m. to take your seat. The Sunday
matinee starts at 2:30 p.m. Adult ticket prices are $14.00 and
students and seniors are $12.00.
