World War II Online / Battleground Europe
“Destiny Awaits You”

It is 1942. The world has been at war for two years. Germany has invaded France, Belgium, and the Zeelands, or the Netherlands. The line has been drawn and “destiny awaits you”.  Each country at war in Europe has a complete army on the field of battle. Infantry brigades, naval fleets, strategic bombing squadrons, and fighter squadrons are available to join. And there are hundreds of combat operations simultaneously taking place in different parts of France.

This isn’t history. This is World War II Online, a MMPG (massive multi-player online game) where players from all over the world are re-fighting the 1942 Battle for France. This is the only virtual battlefield on the Internet. Thousands of players could be online at any given time. Graphics and action are so good it is possible to become completely immersed in the experience of participating in this momentous time in history!

What really makes this game exciting is all the neat equipment players get to use. The developers have really done their homework researching all the equipment and the performance capabilities of each tank, plane, truck and anti-tank gun and so on. The equipment not only looks good but is historically accurate. Even the actual physics of each piece of equipment and weapon is programmed in. This means that if a player tries to destroy a German Panzer IVG, he’d better not use a 37mm anti-tank gun because the physical properties of the weapon would not pierce the armor anywhere on that tank. A better choice would be the 57mm or 3” anti-tank gun because the actual physics of this weapon would do damage to the IVG or Tiger. A player might have learned this by trial and error, consulting the manual, or by asking the online help.

World War II Online, has been around since 1998. In the beginning, the graphics were rather crude, with 2D trees and bushes. But with all the new improvements in Internet technologies, game engines, graphics cards and faster and more powerful computer processors, the game has evolved to the point where the World War II virtual game world is a wonder to behold. The trees, the sky, the clouds, the weather, the sunrise, and the sunset are all programmed into the game. However, it is up to the skill of the players whether battles are won or lost as you will not be playing against computer AI, artificial intelligence, but actual men and women on the other side.

One of the oldest squads is the 1st Royal Canadian Marines. www.1strcm.com The squad consists of members from the US, Canada, Great Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, and Israel. The basic game is sold all over the world in many languages including English, French, Spanish, Polish, Russian, Chinese, and German. Depending on the time of day, a player logging into the game might join up with Aussies, Russian and/or Chinese players. It’s not unusual for the online players to feel a sense of camaraderie within the various squads and armies. Orders are issued from the Allied High Command. Each squad or brigade plan missions and players depend on each other to successfully execute their mission.

After the death of one popular longtime player, online gamers organized and held an online memorial service with full military honors for their departed friend.

Civilians make up most of the player base, but there are also lots of military people playing the game. Recently one of the pilots in the game was in a dogfight at 22,000 ft. over Whitestable, England with two ME 109s and was able to shoot them both down. It was later learned that both MEs were piloted by active duty military fighter pilots!

This reasonably priced game is highly recommended for frustrated fighter jocks or anyone who would like to add a little action to their life. Check out World War II / Battle Ground Europe at www.wwiionline.com
